Introduction to Childhood ADHD Screening Tool

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects millions of children.

According to the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),

  • 6.1 million children are diagnosed with ADHD including:

    • 0.4 million children aged 2 – 5 years
    • 2.4 million children aged 6 – 11 years
    • 3.3 million children aged 12 – 17 years
  • Boys are more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than girls.
  • While the number of ADHD cases increased by 45% from 2003 – 2011, the number of cases decreased by 5% from 2011 – 2016.
  • Overall, ADHD cases increased by 80% over the 20 years between 1997 and 2017.
The signs of ADHD are not always easy to detect in children.

For example,

  • Is your child naturally energetic and happy OR does he have ADHD with Hyperactivity?
  • Does your child dislike school and homework due to a lack of interest in the subject and poor quality teaching OR does she suffer from ADHD with Distractibility?
  • Is your child comfortable talking to strangers and saying what he thinks OR does he have ADHD with Impulsivity?

These are questions best answered by professionals after performing a full evaluation. But before going through the time, expense, and process of a professional evaluation, the following screening tool can help you decide how likely it is that your child has ADHD.

Any screening tool cannot give a diagnosis. But it will let you know if seeking professional advice is a good idea or if you are likely worrying about nothing.
